A smartphone is generally considered any handheld device that integrates personal information management and mobile phone capabilities in the same device. Often, this includes adding phone functions to already capable PDAs or putting "smart" capabilities, such as PDA functions, into a mobile phone.
History
The first smartphone was called Simon designed by IBM in 1992 and shown as a concept product that year at COMDEX, the computer industry trade show held in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was released to the public in 1993 and sold by BellSouth. Besides a mobile phone, it also contained a calendar, address book, world clock, calculator, note pad, e-mail, and games. It had no physical buttons to dial with. Instead customers used a touch-screen to select phone numbers with a finger or create facsimiles and memos with an optional stylus. Everywhere you look, people have smartphones. We are walking around with more computing power in our pocket than all of NASA had in the 1960s, and there's such a bewildering range of choices that you have to rely on the three bullet points the mobile phone stores and brochures provide. In this group test, the first of two looking at smartphones, I will look at a number of the most recent Symbian-based smartphones, what they offer, and their strengths and weaknesses.
